A Little Bit ABOUT Me

Welcome!

My name is Jessica Carpenter, the artist behind jcarp designs, and I am so glad that you are here! I am a lover of tea, coffee, and plants. I have two fur children, Max, and Boots, who make regular appearances on my Instagram stories.

When I am not at my full-time job, I usually at my desk painting with a cup of tea in hand.

A little glimpse into the past...

I have been drawing ever since I can remember. The flower drawing below was pulled out of the depths of my mom's garage and now sits in office. I was 6 or 7 years old when I painted this.

Art was something that I always did in school, but it wasn't something that I took seriously until college. I drew the portrait below in a high school art class.

Throughout college I was always involved in Theatre. I tried everything from acting, to costuming, to building scenery, to running shows and working in the box office. I quickly realized that I thoroughly enjoyed scenic painting. It was a way to be involved in theatre and create art.

After college...

After graduating from San Francisco State University, I attended a two-year scenic artist training program at Cobalt Studios in New York. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life and everything I know about painting I learned from that school. During my time at Cobalt Studios, I learned the specifics of drawing, painting, drafting, color mixing and the list goes on and on. Below are some of the projects that I completed while attending Cobalt Studios.

and then jcarpdesigns was created...

The plan was to move to New York and work as a scenic painter, but life happens and sometimes things don't go as planned. My dad passed away during my last year at Cobalt Studios. I was shattered to say the least, and I knew that after graduating I wanted to move back to California to be closer to my family and friends. After about a year of not creating art, I knew that I wanted to start my own business.

My style has completely changed from when I first started jcarp designs. I fell in love with using watercolor and ink in a minimal way. I do sneak in the occasional acrylic painting or portrait drawing from time to time.

If you had asked me 5 years ago, if I wanted to own my own business, I would have said no. Sometimes life has a way of surprising you and taking you on a different path than you had planned. I can't imagine myself doing anything else.
